Wednesday, November 19th I attended a freedom 6A battle of two potential Top-15 teams in 6A with the Sandra Day O'Connor Eagles traveling about an hour to take on the home Hamilton Huskies.
The game started with a steal by Melvin Stubbs Jr and an up the court pass to Rylan Parsley led to a monster dunk. Then a missed layup led to a mid-range pull-up by Stubbs followed by another dunk on the break for Parsley. A quick TO by Hamilton had them down at 6-0.
Once again another steal by Colton Watson for a dunk for a 8-0 lead. The Eagles seemed to be everywhere early on.
Camden Lauderbach finally scored the Huskies first points of the year with a cut off the ball for a 8-2 Eagles lead. The Huskies settled down and cut it to 9-7 but the Eagles scored the last five to give them a 14-7 lead after 1st quarter.
The 2nd quarter was back and forth but then Dom Lott scored five straight with an offensive rebound in the air put back followed by a 3 to give SDO a 26-14 lead with 3:08 to play in the half. MJ Cole finally get on the board with an and-1 to cut it to 27-20 w 1 min left.
It was 32-22 at halftime as Parsley, Stubbs Jr and Watson all had huge impacts in the half.
The second half started and Jake Steele scored but Parsley hit a 4-point play. Multiple turnovers led to open looks for the Eagles and broke open the game at 46-24 with 4:34 left in the 3rd quarter led by Ryker Hughes back to back 3’s. Extra possessions and open 3’s the rest of the quarter gave the Eagles a demanding 57-33 lead heading into the 4th.
At 59-33 in the 4th quarter they inserted their bench five with 6:45 left to play and it became a running clock type of ending. The Eagles cruised to the victory 74-41.
